A check-raise in poker is two consecutive actions by a player in two betting rounds, provided that he is out of position. The essence of the technique is that the player checks in the hope of an opponent’s bet in a later position. Having received confirmation of his expectations, the poker player makes a raise on the next street.
Such manipulations are two actions that cause conflicting opinions of opponents about the strength of the player’s hand. Checking suggests that the player has weak or medium cards and stays in the game in the hope of getting a boost on the next round. The raise forces opponents to make two assumptions: the poker player has received a significant increase or decided to take the pot with a bluff.
The purpose of the technique is to knock opponents out of the hand, and get the pot or increase the pot in the hope of becoming the owner of a solid amount. Depending on the goal pursued, the use of a check-raise has its own characteristics for each case.
