The first betting round in poker is called a preflop. It starts immediately after the cards are dealt. Depending on the exact variation of poker, there can be multiple preflops. In Texas Hold’em there are usually up to two. It is possible to win the bank in this phase of the game by making the bet no opponent will be able to call.

Betting on preflop.

When all forced bets (small blind and big blind) are made, the dealer starts distributing cards to the players. Based on the gained cards, the players decide whether they want to continue playing or wait for the better hand.

The betting is started by the player sitting left of the big blind. He has three options:

To fold (or to pass).

To call.

To raise.

Preflop betting ends when all of the players have folded – in this case, the winner is the player who has made the raise or the big blind, or when all of the players have made the call. In this case, the next phase of the game is initiated, and the dealer starts to distribute three community cards – this is called the flop.

Preflop Strategy.

The actions made during preflop often determine how the rest of the game plays out. It is recommended for beginners to carefully choose their starting hands. The post-flop will be way easier since you’re less likely to find yourself in a tough position. The right decision is determined by the following factors: the strength of the hand, your table position, and opponents’ actions. By taking all three aspects into account, you’ll be able to make the most optimal move.
